You’ve just warmed your hollige and just
brewed your decaff, and settled down to enjoy the view of trees from your
balcony, and maybe write a few intelligent things in your lovely notebook.
Three seconds into this moment, you remember that message you had to send to
your sister which is so, so important that it has to be done right now, right
this minute.
15 minutes later, you look up. Your coffee
cold, your hollige crisped beyond repair. Your moment sacrificed for the
inconsequentia of other peoples’ social media lives.
Sigh.
Addictions are of different types. Time and
relativity suddenly assume new meaning, when a couple of hours pass by in a
flash of hash tags and a swish of a departing whatsapp. Or a ping, if that’s what
your alerts preference is.
A lert. What’s a lert?
It’s certainly not the perky, observant
creature I once was. Now I’m slothful and voyeuristic. I’m often envious, and disgusted
with self promotions and shameless posturing. I’m cowed down by aggro comments
in a way I never was/am in real life. Who are you, strange person? You are my
evil doppelganger, my cowardly shadow. All the things I hate in other people.
You are my instatwitsnapbook Jekyll.
And the real me’s finding less and less
places to hide.
